考試回顧

考場體驗：北京王府學校

    考場地址：北京市昌平區(qū)北七家鎮(zhèn)王府街11號北京王府學校1號樓4層

    交通路線：地鐵5號線天通北苑站下車，換乘快速公交3號線到王府溫馨公寓站(北京王府學校正門)。

　　考場評估：北京10月GRE考位十分緊張，提前一個多月已經沒有任何考位，當時筆者還特意查詢了北京周邊天津以及石家莊的考點，發(fā)現(xiàn)也早已被訂完?？记皟蓚€禮拜，ETS放出了北京王府學校和私立匯佳學校的一些考位，筆者果斷報名。所以建議那些考試時間安排在緊靠申請季deadline的9月和10月的考生，務必至少提前2-3個月報名，當考位已滿的時候，不時刷新報名頁面，看有無新增考位放出。談回北京王府學校這個考點，共有4個機房作為GRE考點。感覺監(jiān)考人員業(yè)務素質不錯，考場秩序維持的很好，無論安檢還是監(jiān)考都很嚴格。盡管離馬路不遠，但因為隔音很好，完全聽不到外面嘈雜的聲音。而且考場設備很新，加分。所以總體下來這個考場還是挺不錯的，建議城北的考生把這個考點當做選項。

For years, the leading theory for what caused the Younger Dryas (a dramatic reversal, about 12,900 years ago, in a global warming trend) was a release of water from Glacial Lake Agassiz. The theory posited that this meltwater flooded into the North Atlantic, lowering the salinity and intensity of surface waters enough to prevent them from sinking. Ocean currents were changed in such a way that northward transport of heat in the ocean diminished, and the North Atlantic regions plunged back into near-glacial conditions. However, evidence has emerged that the Younger Dryas began long before freshwater flooded the North Atlantic. Additionally, the temperature changes included by a shutdown in the North Atlantic heat conveyor system are too small to explain the Younger Dryas.

Since these changes went into effect, two new factories have opened in Dillton. Although the two factories employ more than 1,000 people, the unemployment rate in Dillton remains unchanged. Argument

    1.The following appeared in a letter from a firm providing investment advice for a client.?"Most homes in the northeastern United States, where winters are typically cold, have traditionally used oil as their major fuel for heating. Last heating season that region experienced 90 days with below-normal temperatures, and climate forecasters predict that this weather pattern will continue for several more years. Furthermore, many new homes are being built in the region in response to recent population growth. Because of these trends, we predict an increased demand for heating oil and recommend investment in Consolidated Industries, one of whose major business operations is the retail sale of home heating oil."?

    2. The following memorandum is from the business manager of Happy Pancake House restaurants. "Recently, butter has been replaced by margarine in Happy Pancake House restaurants throughout the southwestern United States. This change, however, has had little impact on our customers. In fact, only about 2 percent of customers have complained, indicating that an average of 98 people out of 100 are happy with the change. Furthermore, many servers have reported that a number of customers who ask for butter do not complain when they are given margarine instead. Clearly, either these customers do not distinguish butter from margarine or they use the term 'butter' to refer to either butter or margarine."

     Write a response in which you discuss one or more alternative explanations that could rival the proposed explanation and explain how your explanation(s) can plausibly account for the facts presented in the argument.

    3. The following appeared in a memo from the vice president of a food distribution company with food storage warehouses in several cities.?"Recently, we signed a contract with the Fly-Away Pest Control Company to provide pest control services at our fast-food warehouse in Palm City, but last month we discovered that over $20,000 worth of food there had been destroyed by pest damage. Meanwhile, the Buzzoff Pest Control Company, which we have used for many years, continued to service our warehouse in Wintervale, and last month only $10,000 worth of the food stored there had been destroyed by pest damage. Even though the price charged by Fly-Away is considerably lower, our best means of saving money is to return to Buzzoff for all our pest control services."

     Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
