First Nations Studies is an interdisciplinary program of study examining topics relevant to Indigenous peoples' realities. The program allows students to either specifically focus on Indigenous issues or to combine their program with any other undergraduate program. This format allows students to customize their course selections and combine interdisciplinary program modules to match their interests and their learning goals. Students may select modules after completing their first year of study. You can mix and match modules from First Nations Studies with modules from other programs. This modular structure allows students to combine courses from various departments and faculties that match their academic goals and interests and also provides them the opportunity to achieve a broader knowledge base.

Prior to enrolling in a First Nations Studies module you must complete:

5.0 courses numbered 1000-1999 in at least four different subjects
&1.0 course(s) 1000-1999 from Category B (e.g. Arts & Humanities) or C (e.g. Science)
FNS 1020E with a minimum grade of 60%

For a Major in First Nations Studies, after having completed all first-year requirements with at least 3.0 principal courses and the successful completion of FNS 1020E with a minimum grade of 60%, you may proceed to enrol in courses for the First Nations Studies Major module. You must complete 6 credits and meet the minimum progression requirements. For an overview of course selections for a Major in First Nations Studies please review the Checklist for a Major.

Applicants must complete the full International Baccalaureate Diploma including each of the following to be considered for admission: Completion of the entire Diploma including the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay; Passes in a minimum of 6 subjects of which 3 must be at the Higher Level; A minimum grade total of 28 including points awarded for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge; No mark less than 4 on any individual course; Prerequisites for your program as specified by Western. Other English Language Requirements accepted: Minimum score required on the TOEFL is 550 on the paper based with a 5 on the TWE, and 83 on the internet-based tests with no score below 20; Pearson Test of English Academic: A minimum overall score of 58 is required with no score less than 56; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A minimum overall score of 80 is required with no score less than 78; International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0; CanTEST: A minimum overall score of 4.0 is required with no part less than 4.0; CAEL: A minimum overall score of 60 is required with no part less than 60.
