Computer Science

In this major you'll discover the concepts, techniques and theory behind computer science. Explore artificial intelligence, networking, computer graphics, computer games, and the design of programming languages. Learn the basics of computer programming, and how to understand and master algorithms - the mathematical basis of computer languages. Within the Computer Science major you can choose to specialise in Artificial Intelligence or Cybersecurity.

Course Structure

For this degree you'll need to:

Complete at least 360 points, of which:

• At least 270 points must be from courses listed for the BSc
• At least 210 points must be from 200 and 300-level courses, including:
• At least 150 points must be from courses listed for the BSc
• At least 75 points must be from 300-level courses listed for the BSc

Courses listed for other degrees may be counted as being BSc courses, including:

• A maximum of 30 points if taken to satisfy a BSc major
• A maximum of 60 points if taken to satisfy a second major from another first degree at this university
• A maximum of 60 points across both these categories
• Complete one course in MATH 100-399, PHYS 100-399, QUAN 100-399, STAT 100-399, ENGR 121-123 or Engineering Physics for Electronics and Computer Systems (ENGR 142)
• Complete one approved course that demonstrates competency in oral and written communications

In addition to the degree requirements, for this major you'll need to complete:

Four courses at 100 level:

• Either Introduction to Computer Program Design (COMP 102) or Introduction to Computer Science (COMP 112)
• Introduction to Data Structures and Algorithms (COMP 103)
• Either Engineering Mathematics Foundations (ENGR 121) and Engineering Mathematics with Logic and Statistics (ENGR 123)

Or Discrete Mathematics and Logic (MATH 161) and one course from:

• Probability and Decision Modelling (MATH 177)
• Statistics for Business (QUAN 102)
• Statistics in Practice (STAT 193)

Four courses at 200 level:

• Algorithms and Data Structures (COMP 261)

Three further courses from:

• COMP 200-299
• NWEN 200-299
• SWEN 200-299

Four courses at 300 level from:

• Real-time 3D Computer Graphics (CGRA 350)
• COMP 300-399
• NWEN 300-399
• SWEN 300-399
