For students considering a career in speech-language pathology or audiology, this undergraduate major provides the scientific foundation required for graduate academic work and clinical training. This major may be a good match for you if you have an interest in understanding how we communicate, researching the normal or disordered processes in communication, and/or working clinically in the field of communication disorders with individuals with speech, language, hearing or swallowing deficits. The BA degree in Communication Science (CS) emphasizes the normal processes of speech, language and hearing, and also provides an introduction to the nature, cause and remediation of communication disorders across the lifespan.

A professional career in speech-language pathology or audiology requires further graduate study in an accredited program and completion of a clinical fellowship year.

Speech-language pathology and audiology are diverse fields with many opportunities to work with populations ranging from infants to the elderly in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, universities, research institutes, industry and private practice.

The undergraduate major in Communication Science is also appropriate for graduate work in the neurosciences, speech and hearing sciences, health related professions (including dentistry, medicine, and physician assistant studies) as well as graduate work in a range of education specializations, e.g. special education, education of the deaf and hard of hearing and early intervention.

Prospective students who have not earned college credits since graduating from high school with a diploma or GED should consult this section for information on admission to the University of Pittsburgh. For the Pittsburgh campus, a 100 or higher TOEFL composite score with sub scores of 21 or higher is considered competitive, or a 7.0 IELTS with sub scores of 6.0 or higher.
