The University of Pittsburgh's well-established athletic training program prepares students in the prevention, recognition, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries incurred by athletes and the physically active-skills important for a career in the multidisciplinary field of sports medicine. Athletic trainers administer immediate emergency care and, under the supervision of a licensed physician, help develop a treatment program based on medical, exercise, and sports sciences.

The program is structured to provide a rigorous plan of study to include both academic and clinical education experiences. Students rotate through four on-campus athletic training facilities and several off-site affiliated settings during their clinical education, acquiring valuable clinical skills under the direct supervision of certified athletic training staff in a variety of clinical experience settings including all levels of collegiate athletics, secondary schools, sports medicine clinics, and professional sports.

Upon successful completion of the four-year baccalaureate degree, students are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification, Inc. certification examination. Successful completion of licensing exams affords the candidate a variety of employment opportunities and graduate education options, including athletic training services in a number of Sports Medicine professions.

Prospective students who have not earned college credits since graduating from high school with a diploma or GED should consult this section for information on admission to the University of Pittsburgh. For the Pittsburgh campus, a 100 or higher TOEFL composite score with sub scores of 21 or higher is considered competitive, or a 7.0 IELTS with sub scores of 6.0 or higher.
