The Bachelor of Teaching (BTchg) degree is a three-year programme (360 points), registered at Level 7 on the New Zealand qualifications Framework, and designed to enable graduates to meet the requirements for initial teacher registration in New Zealand. It provides the initial step for teachers on the road of lifelong professional learning.

The degree is underpinned by four themes and divided into central strands that are designed to promote student reflection on the interrelationship of knowledge and issues presented throughout the chosen programme and to make connections between theory and practice associated with the degree papers.

Early Childhood Education

Papers within this programme address professional teaching issues, Te Whariki (the early childhood curriculum), educational theory, subject studies and practical teaching experience through placements in early childhood settings. Students also select to study a subject of their choice, either from the range of subject studies papers offered at the College of Education or from the wider University.

Students must have Senior High School graduation and one year of successful study at a recognized institution of university standing; or Senior High School graduation and completion of a diploma with high passing grades at a recognized institute or university. Specific requirements may vary from Province to Province. English language requirements: IELTS score of 6.0 in the academic module (with no individual band below 6.0); Internet-based TOEFL - Score of 80 (writing 20); Paper-based TOEFL - Score of 550 (TWE 4.5); Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) - Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) - Overall score of 176 (with no individual band below 169); Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic - Overall score of 58 with no communicative skills score below 50.
