UTP: Product Design is the equivalent to the first year of your undergraduate Product Design degree. Upon completion of the programme, you will be eligible to progress to the second year of the Bachelor of Product Design degree at the University of Canterbury.

Programme facts

University of Canterbury is leading the way with its multidisciplinary Bachelor of Product Design. Product Design combines creative design, science, engineering, and business studies. Product designers plan and develop items for use in homes, businesses, and industry.

By specialising in Applied Immersive Game Design, you will gain the knowledge of the game design process, from creating an exciting and engaging interface to incorporating 3D and augmented reality technologies to enhance the user’s experience. Be equipped on the necessary skills to know how to create games for both recreational and educational purposes and be part of the growing game development industry in New Zealand.

Subjects

UTP Product Design is a set programme of study. Students will study seven courses from the following subject areas. Note: Not all subjects will be offered every semester and failure to pass a required course will result in a delay in the completion of studies.

Compulsory academic subjects for all majors:

• Product Design 1
• Mathematics
• Foundation of Engineering
• Fundamentals of Management

Additional courses for specific major
Applied Immersive Game Design:

• Computer Programming
• Computer Science
• The Game Development Process

All UTP students are required to complete compulsory study skills programmes (fee free).
