This holistic degree provides you with a deep understanding of teaching and learning ESOL. You will gain the latest, interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to excel at teaching and supporting learners, whether children or adults.

Gain expertise in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages by studying at our world-ranked Faculty of Education and Social Work.

You will gain a useful foundation in subjects that inform TESOL education, such as psychology, philosophy, sociology and history. You will develop up-to-the-minute knowledge and skills in learning, teaching and assessment. Practical experience is integral to the programme.

This programme will be useful for education leaders and policymakers as well as TESOL teachers.

Programme structure

This three-year programme comprises 360 points of coursework, 120 points per year. You’ll gain a solid grounding in planning and teaching TESOL classes through courses in: pedagogy, teaching and assessment; understanding learners and learning; and the theory and practice of education.

Each year includes two compulsory courses:

Year 1: Introduction to Language Teaching (15 pts) and Te Ao Maori (15 pts) or Hapai Akonga (15 pts)
Year 2: Interdisciplinary Approach: TESOL (30 pts) and Instructed Language Learning (15 pts)
Year 3: Contemporary Issues in TESOL (30 pts) and The Second Language Curriculum (15 pts)

In Year 2, Semester Two, in addition to the two compulsory core courses you will need to choose two courses from the following:

EDUC 213 Education and Social Justice (15 pts)
EDUC 224 Assessment and Evaluation in Education (15 pts)
EDUC 221 Child Development (15 pts) or EDPROFST 205 Promoting Achievement for Diverse Learners (15 pts)
Any 15 pts course from across the University

Where could this programme take you?

You will graduate with excellent skills in teaching interactive TESOL using digital technology. You will also have skills in curriculum development, assessment and planning. You will be able to teach a range of ages, from young learners to adults. (Note: To teach in a New Zealand school, you would need to complete a further Graduate Diploma in Teaching.)
