The Department of Biological Sciences offers an integrated program of coursework leading to the Master of Science degree in Biological Sciences.

Students may choose to pursue either the thesis or non-thesis option. The thesis option allows students to undertake research in areas of Evolution/Ecology or Molecular Biology/Biochemistry and requires a substantial, independent laboratory or field project culminating in a thesis. The non-thesis option allows students to take coursework, experience internships, and develop a capstone project in Biomedical Sciences.

All Master of Science students are required to complete a minimum of 30 graduate credit hours beyond the baccalaureate degree. The course requirement provides students with basic understanding and skills in the Biological or Biomedical Sciences, while allowing individuals to tailor the specific coursework to meet their needs.

Financial support (stipend and tuition) is available on a competitive basis for students interested in the thesis option in the form of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships. Applicants interested in pursuing the thesis option are strongly encouraged to contact faculty members in their area of research interests.

Students must have the following: Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or a 4-year degree equivalent from a recognized institution of higher learning abroad. Applicants enrolled in the final year of a bachelor's degree or international equivalent will be considered for conditional admission. Minimum GPA Requirements: 2.5 grade point average (GPA) on a 4-point scale for all undergraduate coursework, 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4-point scale for all graduate coursework. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Internet-based test score of 79 total or Computer-based test score of 550; The International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Overall band score of 6.5; PTE (Pearson Tests of English) Academic score of 58; IELP Intensive English Language Program: Satisfactory completion of the Intensive English Language Program at UNO; Minimum Scores on IELP Test: Listening Comprehension: 70; Grammar/Reading/Vocabulary: 63; Writing/Composition: 75.
