Programme Aims

This top-up degree programme builds on the foundations of prior training students have acquired in their certificate / diploma studies. It aims to prepare nurses to train-the-trainer and to conduct health education to patient / clients in hospital and community settings. It is also aimed at school teachers, school social workers who work closely with the students to provide basic health education and help youth resist the various attractions; as well as promising health educators for effective health education in various settings.

On completion of the programme, graduates should be able to:

  • integrate knowledge, theory and practice in providing health education in various train-the-trainer programmes in school and healthcare settings for various kinds of clients – school children, teenagers, adults and patients in the community;
  • implement evidence-based practice in health education;
  • diagnose health problems, plan health education strategies, convey implementation of the plan to patients, motivate them to comply, and evaluate outcomes;
  • evaluate contemporary health issues in healthcare; and
  • perceive and adapt to changes in the healthcare field, in society, and in their clients. They should be able to think creatively.

Programme Structure

This top-up degree programme requires students to complete 20 courses (each representing 3 credit points, for a total of 60 cps). Courses will comprise academic core courses, academic electives, honours project and health education practicum in a specified distribution.

Academic Recognition and Career Prospects

Graduates of this Programme will be awarded a Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) degree. This top-up degree will not enable a graduate to become a practicing nurse, a registered teacher or social worker in Hong Kong. However, graduates of the programme will have a wide range of employment opportunities, and will be able to compete for high-level positions. They will be qualified to work as health promotion officers in elderly centers, community health educators, wellness coordinators in outpatient departments / clinics, and so on.

Graduates may also wish to pursue further studies in nursing, sports, public health, education, therapy, social work or other related disciplines offered by local universities. At EdUHK, they will have the opportunity to do postgraduate study through a variety of Master's programmes. The University also offers Doctor of Education programme and PhD programme for doctoral study in the relevant specialties.

Applicants should meet the first cut-off line of the respective province for admission to mainland key universities. English Language Requirements: A TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 80 (internet-based test); or A minimum overall band of 6 in the academic version of IELTS; or A score of 110 or above in JEE English Language; or Grade E or above in GCE AS Level or AL Level English; or Grade C or above in IGCSE/GCE O-level English; or Grade C or above in GCSE English or English Literature. GCE AL / IAL with Grade E or above in 3 AL (or A2) subjects (other than Chinese/Mandarin/English); or Grade E in 2 AL (or A2) plus 2 Advanced Supplementary (AS) subjects (other than Chinese/ Mandarin/English).
