Overview

Studying in Paris gives you the opportunity to augment your study with visits to some of the places that have inspired many of the greatest authors of the last several hundred years. You can also make use of the research resources and archives that are only available in Paris to develop your dissertation over the summer term.

You can choose to begin your studies in September or January and can take a standard (90 ECTS) or an extended (120 ECTS) version of the programme. Part-time study is only available for EU/EEA passport holders, and for those who have the right to remain in France for the duration of their degree.

Programme aims

This programme aims to:

• extend and deepen through coursework and research the students’ understanding of a body of literatures in English, with special emphasis on modern and postcolonial literatures, and on literary and critical theory
• develop knowledge and understanding of relevant aspects of contemporary Paris and the cultural history of the city as reflected in modern European, English and American literatures and other artistic media
• provide students with a taught foundation for subsequent postgraduate research
• enable students to develop an historical awareness of literary traditions particularly those that have been located in, or in some other way focused on, Paris
• Introduce students to bibliographic method and scholarship and to foster in them the research methods that facilitate advanced literary study
• provide a basis in knowledge and skills for those intending to teach English and American literature, especially in higher education
• develop the understanding and critical appreciation of the expressive resources of language
• offer opportunities for students to develop their potential for creative writing (where such a module is taken)
• offer scope for the study of literature within an interdisciplinary context, notably that provided by history
• provide opportunities for the development of personal, communication and research skills and other key skills appropriate for graduate employment both in industry and in the public sector
• provide flexibility and a multidisciplinary approach
• provide teaching informed by research and scholarship
• meet the lifelong needs of students from a diverse range of backgrounds
• support national and regional economic success
• build on close ties within Europe and elsewhere, reflecting Kent’s position as the UK European University
• produce graduates of value to the region and nationally, in possession of key knowledge and skills, with the capacity to learn
• prepare students for employment or further study
• provide learning opportunities that are enjoyable experiences, involve realistic workloads, based within a research-led framework and offer appropriate support for students from a diverse range of backgrounds provide high quality teaching in supportive environments with appropriately qualified and trained staff.

Careers

Many career paths can benefit from the writing and analytical skills that you develop as a postgraduate student in the School of English. Our students have gone on to work in academia, journalism, broadcasting and media, publishing, writing and teaching; as well as more general areas such as banking, marketing analysis and project management.
