What is the programme about?

Even in the midst of recession, the drug and medicinal products manufacturing sector remains Ireland’s largest single exporter. This programme was designed in consultation with industrial partners to meet the growing needs of the sector. A medicinal product is “any substance or combination of substances for treating or preventing disease in human beings or animals”.

This programme allows students to develop the analytical laboratory skills necessary to work in the highly regulated industries that manufacture medicines and healthcare products. It offers students the chance to study how these essential products and their delivery systems are discovered, designed, developed and tested to make sure that they are manufactured to the highest possible quality. It takes a detailed look at every aspect of manufacture in Ireland’s most successful sector and develops the students’ skills in the areas most required for this leading industry. There is also a six-month work placement in Year 3 of the programme to provide valuable work experience.

Further Studies

Graduates from this programme will be employed in Quality Control and Quality Assurance roles in state-of-the-art drug and medicinal product or medical device industries. They will have the analytical and team work skills to work in other relevant industries. Some graduates may consider going on to do further research such as the Masters degree in Analytical Science.
