When you learn another language, you are also learning a whole new culture – another way of thinking, seeing, and being in the world.

The study of modern languages and literatures covers the history, written works, culture and civilization of languages with international influence. Laurentian’s program includes Italian and Spanish.

Courses in literature, film, theatre, music and popular arts.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of Laurentian’s international exchange programs with universities abroad.

Four-year specialization requires students to obtain credits in three languages.

A second language helps students gain greater insight into their own culture. Studies have shown a positive correlation between the study of a second language and the creative functioning of learners. The self-concept of second-language learners is significantly higher than that of non-second language students.

Italian

Offers language and literature courses at all levels and culture courses on Italian food culture, music, the Italian immigrant experience and critical theory. Students may take part in Le Maschere Laurenziane, the Italian Studies student theatre company. Incontri, the Italian students’ club, organizes many socio-cultural activities including an annual opera trip to Toronto. Opportunity to study abroad at the University of Udine (in Friuli, Italy) for one year. Upper-year students can participate in the peer-tutoring program, work as research or teaching assistants and participate in a co-op program when registered in specific courses.

Language is the key to the world! When you learn to communicate with other people in their own language and culture, you immediately open up access to countless new opportunities. Learning languages is one of the most practical ways you can prepare for life and work in today’s globalized world. The booming communications industry today crosses linguistic and cultural lines all over the planet and touches every sphere of activity. With another language, you expand your horizons as you acquire a new resource for making your life a success and building the kind of world you want to live in.

Spanish:

Includes language courses at all levels, as well as the study of the rich Hispanic culture in Spain and the Americas. Students are immersed in Spanish literature and films and are able to perfect their language skills while experiencing a new culture. For their third year, students can apply to the exchange program to study at the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, in Ciudad Real, Spain.

El Club Hispano organizes numerous social and cultural activities throughout the year. Upper-year students can participate in the peer-tutoring program and work as research assistants or teaching assistants in Spanish-language tutorials.
