Conquer the language of the ancient world, delve into Greek and Roman writings, ideas, and artifacts.

Examine the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean, particularly the ancient Greeks and Romans, covering a period of over 4,000 years. Study the ancient Greek and Latin languages to understand artifacts from the ancient world. Discover languages, literature, drama, mythology, religion, history, sport, philosophy, and gender issues.

Apply knowledge of Latin to understand the vocabulary, structure, and development of many modern languages, including Canada's two official languages.

Participate in summer programs throughout North America and archaeological excavations around the Mediterranean.

Concentration in Classical Studies:

All students entering a BA program as of September 2017 are required to take 6 credits each of linguistic awareness, scientific literacy and indigenous content as per the regulations.

Although the requirements have been slotted in first year in the description below, students may fulfill them at any time during their studies.

Eligible courses are available at the 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 levels and students should take them at the appropriate time in their studies.

Courses fulfilling these requirements may be taken as electives or as part of a minor, concentration, major or specialization.

First Year:

• ANCS 1006E Greek Civilization
• ANCS 1007E Roman Civilization
• 6 elective credits in the Sciences
• 6 elective credits in Indigenous content (starting 2017)
• 12 elective credits

Upper Years:

• GREC 2115E Introduction to Classical Greek (or GREC 2116 AND GREC 2117)
• OR LATN 2115E Introductory Latin
• 6 credits in ANCS at the 3000 level
• 18 additional credits in ANCS/GREC/LATN courses
• 30 elective credits

Note: Students may not exceed 42 credits at the 1000 or 9100 level in their degree program.
