Overview

The First City UC Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Honours emphasizes in developing students with broad range of skills and knowledge to fulfill the requirements of a mechanical engineer. It ranges from materials, solid and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, control, instrumentation, design, manufacturing and other specialize areas. It also emphasizes on strengthening students’ analytical and problem solving skills. Many of the modules in this programme will include mini-projects and students will work in groups to produce a solution to a complex engineering problem.

Furthermore, the programme aims to impart to students the interpersonal and engineering management skills such as Operations and Quality Management, Engineering Practice and Communication Skills, Professional Practice, and Project Management and Product Development. This cross-disciplinary knowledge allows an engineer to turn a good idea and innovation into a marketable quality product.

Learning outcome

Graduates of this programme will be able to:

Apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering fundamentals to the solution of complex engineering problems

Identify, formulate, and research literature and analyses complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences

Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations

Conduct investigation into complex problems using research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of information to provide valid conclusions

Create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools, including prediction and modeling, to complex engineering activities, with an understanding of the limitations

Apply reasoning informed by contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to professional engineering practice

Understand the impact of professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts and demonstrate knowledge of and need for sustainable development

Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of engineering practice

Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions;

Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams and in multi-disciplinary settings;

Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.

Students are required to complete international academic qualification equivalent to Malaysian STPM - Minimum 2Cs with credit in Mathematics at SPM or its equivalent, UEC - Minimum 5Bs (including English and Mathematics), GCE A-Level - Minimum 2Es with 5 credits in GCE O Level / SPM (including English and Mathematics), Foundation Matriculation - Pass with minimum CGPA 2.0 with credit in Mathematics in SPM or its equivalent, Diploma - Pass minimum CGPA 2.5 with a credit in Mathematics in SPM or its equivalent. Other equivalent qualifications which are recognized by the Malaysian government.
