Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

The Applied Biology and Biotechnology (ABB) programme aims to produce competent professionals having the proper mix of generic technical skills and broad knowledge in applied biology, with particular emphasis in biotechnology at the Honours level. As students navigate through the programme and embrace the principles of modern biotechnology, they continuously hone their development of analytical, creative and problem-solving skills. Students in the programme could also pursue additional postgraduate studies locally or overseas.

Together with additional work experience through industrial visits, Work-Integrated Education and summer placements in local and overseas companies, our graduates are well prepared to meet both the current and future demands of bioscience-related organizations in Hong Kong, Mainland China and abroad.

Programme Characteristics

The ABB Programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology (RSB), an internationally recognized professional body that promotes and supports the advancement of skills and education in the biosciences. As an additional distinction, ABB was the first international degree programme world-wide to be accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, and graduates qualify for membership in the RSB. Our programme uniquely prepares students for their careers by providing them with a broad knowledge base and technical skill set in the biological sciences, making them desirable to employers both within and beyond their chosen field.

Roughly three out of every four courses in the curriculum consists of biology-related subjects, with the remaining courses covering a more multidisciplinary palette of topics ranging from other natural sciences to general education. Focusing on the application of biotechnology, the programme is comprised of Core subjects that include Physiology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biochemical Techniques, Molecular Biology & DNA Technology, and Elective subjects, in which students can more deeply explore special topics such as Microbial Biotechnology, Immunotechnology, Bioinformatics, Protein Biotechnology and Recent Developments in Medical Biotechnology. The curriculum is designed to enrich students' knowledge and technical skills in the biological sciences more broadly, and in the biotechnology arena more specifically, to better prepare them for both the academic and industrial sectors.

Curriculum

Year One studies include the University's core curriculum and underpinning subjects common to science students and general chemistry with laboratory skills training.

Year Two & Year Three students are required to complete core biological, biochemical and biotechnological subjects before proceeding to select their Elective Subjects in biotechnology.

Final Year students complete a Final Year Project in which they tackle a scientific problem or research topic, utilising the discipline specific knowledge, concepts and generic skills developed through the different stages of this programme.
