Canadian Studies reaches across departments and faculties to help you understand Canada from many different perspectives, whether historical, economic, political, sociological—or even musical.

What will I learn?

As a second field of study leading to a Minor, a Double Major or a Combined Honours BA or BSc, the Canadian Studies program provides the opportunity to enrich and enhance your work on Canadian topics beyond your primary departmental home.

You'll take a group of core courses that study Canada from an interdisciplinary perspective and then choose from a long list of electives cross-listed in other departments throughout the university.

  • Canadian Literature
  • Contemporary Issues in Indigenous Studies

Careers and future study:

The interdisciplinary approach of the Canadian Studies program is a great foundation for a wide range of activities and careers, including journalism, business, education and law. In addition, you could find yourself in any of the following careers upon graduation:

  • policy advisor
  • museum guide
  • Librarian

Future studies could include programs at the graduate or professional level in arts and social sciences, journalism or law.

Students must have completion of secondary school (Grade 12) or equivalent; A minimum overall average of 70% in five academic Grade 12 courses; A final grade of at least 70% in Grade 12 academic English and any other required subject. English language requirement: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - 237 (computer-based) 90 (iBT) and no lower than 20 in each band; International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.5 overall and no lower than 6.0 in each band; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) – 81; Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 61 overall and no lower than 50 in each skill; Cambridge English: Advanced - 180 overall and no lower than 170 in each band.
